Aurochs were ancient wild ancestors of cattle. Though first domesticated perhaps 10,000 years ago, they did not go completely extinct until hunted to extinction in 1627. The last wild herd lived in Poland. They were beasts, standing 2 meters tall at the shoulders with horns 1 meter long. The bulls weighed about 3000 pounds.
