If I were President...
If I were President, my Middle East policy would start with one principle: stability comes from consistent rules, not from granting one country unlimited exceptions while holding others to impossible standards.
1. Iran’s strategic goal was normalization, not confrontation.
For years, Iran signaled that what it wanted was:
-reintegration into global trade,
-recognition as a legitimate state actor,
-and a path to economic growth through diplomacy rather than isolation.
The U.S. could have leveraged that moment. Instead, we treated diplomacy as a reward rather than a tool, and we allowed another country’s red lines to override our own interests.
2. The U.S. adopted a “no nukes for Iran, no questions for Israel” doctrine — and that double standard destabilized the region.
Israel maintains an undeclared nuclear arsenal, refuses inspections, and is not a signatory to the NPT. Iran is an NPT signatory and was under the most intrusive inspection regime in the world. Yet the U.S. enforced a policy that said:
-Israel may have nuclear weapons with zero transparency.
-Iran may not have even the capability for nuclear latency, even under inspection.
That is not a rules‑based order. That is a privilege‑based order. And privilege breeds insecurity, arms races, and conflict.
3. A better U.S. policy would have been normalization-for-compliance, not punishment-for-existence. This means:
-Full diplomatic normalization with Iran in exchange for verifiable limits on enrichment.
-A regional security framework that includes Iran, the GCC, Turkey, and yes, Israel — but with equal obligations.
-A universal nuclear standard: either everyone abides by inspections, or no one gets special exemptions.
This would have reduced tensions, empowered moderates (yes MODERATES) inside Iran, and prevented the cycle of sabotage, sanctions, and shadow war that has defined the last 20 years.
4. The biggest U.S. mistake was outsourcing our Iran policy to Israel’s strategic preferences. Israel’s position has always been maximalist:
-Iran must have zero enrichment,
-zero nuclear latency,
-zero regional influence,
-and zero ability to deter Israel militarily.
That is not a realistic or sustainable basis for U.S. policy. It forces America into perpetual confrontation, even when Iran is signaling de‑escalation or seeking economic integration (WHICH IS WHAT WAS HAPPENING). Iran repeatedly pursued:
-the JCPOA (which it complied with),
-backchannel talks with the U.S.,
-trade agreements with Europe and Asia,
-and regional de‑escalation with Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
This was a country trying to pivot toward normal state behavior, not a "rogue actor seeking isolation".
A superpower cannot let another state’s insecurities dictate its grand strategy.
