The Germans seemed to "over engineer" everything, making their production..

...slow as compared to the US because of the intricate details and machining required. They did adapt during WWII. For example, the MG34 was difficult to manufacture rapidly in huge numbers, so they changed the design to make the MG42 much easier and faster to produce.
