If you're fluent in Spanish, you'll be fine. I have been several times, the

last was two years ago. I was at Dreams (Canadian owned) & was fine; however, this last time around I noticed more hostility for some reason. For example, a waitress would take the TSO & kid's order, then ignore me and walk off. It happened more than once with more than one waitress. I had to go out of my way to get service more than once. I would get bumped into while walking through a crowd & they would murmur, "Babylon...." All of this not normal behavior was from those who looked to be in their twenties. I still had a great time though. For fun, when we wanted to leave the resort, we just went other resorts at night. I enjoyed the Hard Rock Casino and restaurants/club. It was a much larger scale than Dreams. The Dreams we stayed in had a fun water park that our kids enjoyed. Also, a friend of mine used to be a baseball scout for the Cubs org there. He knows the place very well. He cautioned that more and more Haitians have cross over & are creating a bit of stir. Punta Cana is better than other parts of the country.
