ding, ding, ding, correct!

Norfolk City Council decided to close its public schools in the fall of 1958 in an ill-fated attempt to resist federal orders to desegregate. At the time, Granby HS (Norfolk) was in the middle of its wrestling dynasty, having already won ten consecutive state titles, and destined to win another 11 straight from 1960-1970. When the schools reopened in the spring of 1959, not everyone came back. Some students, including wrestlers, had matriculated early in college, transferred to other schools or dropped out. Lee HS edged out a “skeleton” Granby team for its only state title. The class of 1959 is still referred to in Norfolk circles as “The lost class of 59”.
