At least with Hold Your Hand and Yellow Submarine they were playing

instruments while singing the song. Instead of singing to a recorded track like a lot of pop artists seem to do when they go on tour. If they have a live band on stage, then sometimes the background music gets altered because the live band can't duplicate the way the music was recorded in the studio. That was the case with Steam when they recorded 'Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye.' Steam started out as a 3 member studio band with 1 member doubling as the producer. When that song became popular on the radio and the record label wanted to capitalize on the success of the song, Steam had to double or triple in size for the tour to try to duplicate their studio sound.
