I trim my cat all the time myself
When he sheds they get clumpy, so I try to get him before that. If it clumps, I trim him.
He got bad 8 years ago, and I paid 100 bucks for a bath and trim.
Now, my wife and I spend 70 bucks on Makers Mark and do it ourselves.

It's done with long-haired breeds when there is excessive matting, usually
