20th century war fought with 19th century tactics

Let's just charge those machine-guns with human waves! If it doesn't work, we'll keep doing it until it does work, no matter how many people are killed! One of the greatest decisions by General Pershing was to NOT allow the use of untrained American soldiers to backfill the European armies to replace the troops they lost in the human wave meat grinder. He kept the American units intact and continued to train them in France.
