The kingdom of Israel split over a tax revolt after Solomon's death. After that, ten tribes comprised the Northern Kingdom of Israel and two tribes comprised the Southern Kingdom of Judah. Eventually, the Northern Kingdom was conquered by Assyria. Many, perhaps all, of them were resettled elsewhere in the Assyrian Empire (or perhaps executed). Those tribes were lost to history. Assyria never conquered the Southern Kingdom. Eventually, the Babylonians did conquer the Southern Kingdom and took the tribes of Judah, and Benjamin along with some Levites into exile. When the Persians conquered Babylon, the Persians allowed the (Southern Kingdom) Jews to return to what many of us now call the Holy Land.
