Yes the dumb ordinace is much cheaper but on those big old ships upgrading all the systems on board would not be cheap. Then once you have it out there they are much more expensive to run. An Iowa class had a crew 1,800-2,700 while a missile cruiser is around 330 men on board. Plus the range on those battleships' guns would put them in the range of modern on shore artillery systems. Add to that what we've seen Ukraine has done with drone warfare and the battleships will either have to stay so far away from shore that they would be ineffective or they'd wind up as artificial reefs ** Edited by HokieDevil at 8/15/2024, 4:03:45 PM
