It's how they are non-profits. They have to document a certain amount of

indigent care so that's how they do it. Heck, a lot of states require for-profit hospitals to show a certain amount of indigent care to maintain their licensing, and again, that's how they show it. They amass a huge amount of write-off to justify their existence. If they weren't making money, none of them would be around.
