Most hospitals are non-profits, so no taxes anyway. They do bill higher

than actual cost because they know insurance won't pay the billed amount. A lot of hospitals have pre existing agreements with insurance companies that define payments for surgeries, length of stay, medications, etc. So the hospital knows exactly how much it's going to get paid in advance regardless of billed amount.

MIL had a 15-day stay in the hospital. No surgery. Bill was nearly $250K.
