As the first to become President after his predecessor’s death, Tyler was on shaky political ground from the start. He still got through almost four years without an override. On his last day in office, John Tyler had vetoed a minor bill requiring Congressional approval to fund a new ship for the Revenue Marine Service (the Coast Guard of today). Both the House and Senate got the ⅔ majority to override that veto. Prior to that bill, 18 regular vetoes and 12 pocket vetoes had stood. Of those thirty vetoes, nine were by Tyler. At the time, only Andrew Jackson had vetoed more bills.
