would have gotten pretty concentrated on the sides if the "wings" of the dam were simply a straight shots at an angle down a flat surface, this way it gets spread out over a much greater area. I'll have to go look at picture where water is overflowying the dam. Yeah, curved up at the dam to maintain laminar flow, I would say it's meticulously designed, function can be beauty, eg the lines of a sleek sports car.
