Joe Lewis was the owner of ENIC, the company that owns Spurs. He was an 80-something year old man who hung out on his yacht in the Caribbean and didn't pay attention to the club at all. He finally stepped aside from ENIC (after getting in trouble with the US government). His family (specifically his daughter, I think, who was sitting next to Levy at a recent game) does care very much, unlike him. They started forcing changes on the board this past summer, and brought in their own CEO to work next to Levy. The writing was on the wall, and it's been there since this past summer. The only question was timing. They also made financial investments into the club this summer to help with transfers. Levy's success was his undoing. He was the right guy pre-2016ish. Then the club blew up, but he kept running it financially like a mid-table club, and didn't really know how to do anything else. He built an amazing infrastructure, both with the stadium and training ground, and helped grow the brand worldwide. But from a pure footballing standpoint, he was about a decade too late in stepping aside.
