All districts are supposed to be the same size (about 750,000 each); however, given that districts cannot cross state lines, some are larger than average while others are smaller than average. Delaware’s one district has a 2020 population of 989,948 and Rhode Island’s two districts each had a population of just under 550,000. Both states are essentially too large to have just one district and too small to have two. The forecast is for Rhode Island to lose one of its two districts in the 2030 census, which will make the remaining one district the largest district in the nation.
