ding, ding, ding, correct!
After having been the gateway to the west in the 19th century, St. Louis (pop 575,000) trailed only New York, Chicago and Philadelphia in 1900. Since then, metro St. Louis has done reasonably well, but the city of St. Louis (pop 300,000 in 2020) has had more deaths than births and many people moving to the suburbs to avoid crime, and find better schools. Detroit fell from 13th to 27th during the same period of time.
