Sgt Charles Floyd most likely suffered a ruptured appendix and would have died regardless of whether he had been in the wilderness or he had been in an east coast hospital of that era. Everyone else survived the two year four month and ten day journey. L&C must have been extraordinary leaders to have taken a group of men into the wilderness for that length of time and to have brought all but one back alive.
