I don't think you can call one generation smarter or dumber

Technology has been changing at a pretty rapid clip for over a hundred years now. The fundamental knowledge you need to get by in life changes with every generation. Maybe a modern college kid can't read a paper map...but good luck even finding a paper map you can ask them to read. But on the other hand, I don't think my parents ever figured out how to program a VCR, much less actually do anything with a computer other than browse Facebook. And my grandparents likely couldn't fathom a world where someone grew up not knowing how to grow their own food for the year. Doesn't make one generation is smarter or dumber than another. Just means technology changes quickly and the skills you need to survive change.
