For a brief period of time, Tyson made boxing relevant to the masses
When Tyson was on, people watched. People who had not watched boxing before and have not watched it since. Ali had the same effect, Sugar Ray to a lesser extent, but since Tyson's fall from the top, boxing has been completely irrelevant. If it wasn't for b-street posting stuff here once in a while, I wouldn't even know it still existed.
