For a while I was in charge of the communications department for a Fortune 500 company and was responsible for the company's website. I was contacted by a law firm that said I needed to prove to them that I had a license to use certain fonts being used on the website. I could prove that I had a license for some (through some third party webhosting agreements) but not for others. The law firm said that they represented the font owners and my company should pay them $250k for unauthorized use or they would sue us for more. After some back and forth and my company legal department getting involved, we settled with them for $60k. This law firm (on behest of the font owners), have artificial intelligence constantly scrolling the web looking for specific fonts and then contacting those site owners demanding license proof. Then threatening to sue. What a business model...and I bet it works quite a bit.
