I think it is because of his friendship with Martha Stewart

And not because Martha Stewart is so amazing that anyone who knows her is automatically famous. More because to a casual observer, those are two people who really shouldn't coexist in the same entertainment space. And yet they do. Which makes them both more interesting. He has managed to take his friendship and collaboration with Stewart into new areas of entertainment and just generally staying in the public eye despite his music career being largely in the rear view mirror.
