My take as a casual fan

I "like" Metallica. More than just Enter Sandman because I'm a Hokie, but I genuinely enjoy what one would probably call their greatest hits (ES, One, Master of Puppets, Sad but True, Nothing Else Matters, Seek and Destroy, For Whom the Bell Tolls...maybe a couple of others that are escaping my mind). About half of last night's concert was songs I like, and the other half was songs that were completely unfamiliar to me. I greatly enjoyed the Metallica concert. I know the band members are not young men anymore, but they still put on a great performance. The concert audio/visual experience was very impressive. Ken and Lars in particular felt genuine in how they interacted with the crowd. I don't know if I left the concert with a desire to go buy any of their albums and turn myself into a bigger Metallica fan, but it was an awesome show and I'm very glad I went. To my ear, I would call Metallica's brand of heavy metal to be approachable for a casual fan. As long as you like hard rock (I'm thinking AC/DC, Aerosmith, Van Halen, and the like) you're going to like at least some Metallica. But I would call Pantera and Suicidal Tendencies to be pure Heavy Metal. If that is not a genre of music you already like, I don't think Pantera and ST are going to be appealing. And to me, they weren't.
