Congratulations, that sounds like a great vacation. A couple of suggestions

Since you are not a frequent flyer, I will mention these. Dress in layers for the flights that are easy to add or shed as needed in a tight space. It will be cold on one flight and hot on the next, just seems to me the cabin temperature is all over the place. Unless you are the type to wear shorts year round, you will likely not be comfortable at some point and need to adjust. Stay hydrated for the long flight. You will want to get up and move, so going to the bathroom is a good excuse to get up and move around. Get your airlines app and check in on the app if possible. This will give you push notifications of any delays and gate changes, and it also helps navigate the connecting airports. If you have a delay an miss a connection, the airline will frequently rebook you on the next available flight and sent it to the app or give you options on the app., you may be able to skip the standing in line to make a change with the app. Based on the connections you listed I assume you are leaving Roanoke on American and returning on Delta. The Delta app will show you an airport map if you tap on the gate in the app., Been a while since I flew American, but I would think they have something similar on their app. The boarding pass will be on the app once you check in, but you can still get it printed if you wish. If using the app, just save the boarding pass to your wallet so you have it as a backup. Checking bags at Roanoke can be a slow process, they always seem to be understaffed, but part of the issue is that being a small airport the staff has duties that would be handled by different people at bigger airports. At Roanoke you have to take your checked luggage yourself from the check in counter to the TSA baggage drop, occasionally the is a line there also. Not a big concern, but just be aware the line may look short, but it can move slow. The tradeoff is, TSA screening moves well at Roanoke. If you are on one of the early flights where the plane was at ROA overnight and the is frost, they will have to de-ice after you push back from the gate. This will almost certainly result in at least a 30 min. delay in takeoff, another area where Roanoke is very slow. Nothing you can do about this, but just expect it on a frosty morning. I would assume you are not parking at the airport for that long, but if you are try to get a parking space in between where the first in gate to the long term parking and and the terminal. I have not heard or seen anything recently, but the was a time when several cars were getting broken into on the far edge of the parking lot. I think the airport and city quietly took some action to discourage this, but I try not to risk it and I have never had or hear of anyone having a issue if the were on the ¾ of the parking lot close to the terminal. Safe travels and enjoy.
