I've taken the train to Richmond, DC, Philly, and NYC on multiple occasions with minimal issues (sometimes experience delays but that's been it for me). Like others have stated, get your train tickets as soon as you know your dates. This will 100% be the cheapest you will get them. Amtrak is too popular these days for lat minute cheap fares. Look for discounts online on their website. Should be able to get a senior citizen discount. Plenty of parking (free) in the Norfolk lot adjacent to the terminal.That being said, would recommend getting dropped off/picked up by a friend so you don't have to worry about any potential issues (it's open parking near the ball park, there is no security). As you stand in the parking lot and look at the terminal, the quiet car is traditionally the one on the left end (the back of the train). Highly recommend the quiet car as long as you will be quiet too. Since you are leaving from Norfolk, you will be the first passengers on so reserved seating/business class is not really required unless you indeed want a little more room. I prefer the quiet. Plenty of overhead storage for your luggage. You can also check luggage but I've never done it. Bring food and drink to make your life easier. Restrooms will be on one end of the car. Nothing fancy - it's a restroom. There's also a dining car with basic food that's marked up but not crazy priced. They'll be outlets on the exterior bulkhead below the windows. If your sitting on the inside/aisle seat, you'll need a longer cord to plug in. Once you get settled in, the conductor will come through to check your ticket and mark your destination with a tag above your seat. When you get to DC, they'll be a power/crew changeover and you'll have to show your tickets again. Views going north/south are okay but it's not the Rocky Mountaineer, you're just going from one place to another on this route. In other words, it really doesn't matter which side you sit on. When you get to Philly (William Gray 30th Street Station) go to the information desk and pick up a free Philly map and ask any questions you may have. They provided my son and I great information/recommendations. You can also use you Amtrak ticket on the day of arrival and departure from Philly to take the regional rail for free. It runs every few minutes. It'll save you a few bucks. The people at the station information desk can help you with directions to the regional rail. You'll just show your hard copy or your phone wallet ticket to the attendant and scan trough the gate. If you're in Philly for a few days, get a Philly Phlash bus pass. It'll take you all around the city to the various sites for a decent price (five bucks for all day rides). Philly is a great city - enjoy!
