I used to take Amtrak DC --> NY quite a bit.
I imagine this is the "regional train" which just means more stops. I prefer the train for that trip to NYC b/c you can just get on and be done with it. No security, no lines, no moving from one place to another, etc. Just get your seat, and you can read until you get off in PHI.
One thing that might be worth it (if available) is paying a little extra to reserve a particular seat. that way you don't have to worry about trying to get on train right away, or moving around to a better seat when people get on and off in DC. This may require business class, but last time I bought a ticket for my daughter the price difference was minimal.
