We were in a not dissimilar situation
Last Dec. 19 our son, a freshman in college, ran his e-bike into a truck turning in front of him. Policeman showed up on our door at midnight to break the news - hope I never have to have that experience again. He had to be taken to a Level 1 trauma center from his college town, so we drove through the night to get there. Traumatic brain injury, two fractured wrists, four cracked ribs, broken jaw, couple lost teeth. ICU for 3 days, out of the hospital in a week.
We consider it a miracle he had no spinal damage, that all the physical wounds have healed, and that his cognitive and executive functions were unharmed. But his temperament has changed somewhat and his ability to make rational decisions (already hindered by the fact that he's 19) has been set back a couple years best we can tell.
Very glad to hear of your wife's recovery. We're hoping for the same eventual outcome for our son.
