Frankly the Yankees center field area is one of the most impressive spots in a baseball stadium when you see the plaques for the guys who have had their numbers retired. And they had team success that is still unmatched in baseball. They don’t seem to have an issue fielding a full roster and finding numbers for guys to wear every with a great deal of retiree numbers. Basketball has fewer players on a team obviously so it shouldn’t impact them having retired numbers. Football is challenge due to the high number of roster players but even Pry and Co found a way to get multiple guys with the same number on the field at the same time. Unfortunately the officials seemed to catch that before our coaches did Syracuse is a good case study for what happens when you allow retired numbers to come back in play. They, and Jim Brown, allowed 44 to recirculate including with Michael Owen’s, but it seems like the new guy rarely matches the success of the one who got the number retired. Frankly I see no reason to let one season mercanaries were retired numbers. It’s an example of people wanting something without earning it.
