Injuries
Interesting how the talking heads mention injuries related to which teams are under consideration for the dance. Have not heard VT mentioned in that discussion.

Why would they talk about a team not in the discussion for the tournament?

Injuries are part of it for just about all teams
This is where coaches earn their pay. Coaches react in different ways: 1. Next man up and keep doing what you do 2. Shorten the bench and go with who you trust in games. 3. Shift things around to take pressure off replacements 4. Re-shuffle the deck to play the cards you have left Since we can't get the McD's all-American recruits to fill the roster, it's tough to do the next man up way. The Dukes, UNCs, and other Basketball top tier teams can do this. Coach Young seems to be a coach that is between 1 & 2. He tries to keep the offensive and defensive philosophies going and just shorten the bench at certain positions. This is why we saw several players (Mutts, Pedulla, and Cattoor when he got back) put in 38-40 minutes each game. We stayed competitive in just about every game except at UVA and Duke. We suffered the other losses due to the last 5 minute let downs. Was that being tired or what the other teams did?

If VT were on the bubble, they’d talk about their injuries.

I’m guessing because we have zero chance of making it w/o winning ACC
