Thought it was a good move to throw in every now and then....
It's a good tactic for more than just advancing the ball and initiating the offense.
Spread the floor with shooters and put the ball in the hands of your best playmaker out front who has an "in space" match up advantage vs his defender. It also gives teams something additional to prep for.
