John Amos' character is named Cleo McDowell. He owns a fast food

restaurant that looks very similar to McDonald's establishment. There is a famous quote in the movie (see below) that is one of things people remember about it. "I'm McDowell's. They got the Golden Arches, mine is the Golden Arcs. They got the Big Mac, I got the Big Mick. We both got two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles and onions, but their buns have sesame seeds." I believe he said McDonald's sued him for copyright infringement. Since a good percentage of portals candidates don't continue school if they don't find a new portal home, I didn't feel like saying 'Welcome to McDonald's. Would you like fries with that?' Since I used McDowell's, I decided to keep with the spirit of the quote and assume McDonald's owns the copyrights to french fries (no idea if true or not). So McDowell would have called his fries something else.
