Right now there isn't enough people to fill up what we have.

I went to the movies yesterday. I was the only person in the entire theatre. Some of the bars that currently exist don't stay open seven days a week these days. Many have been understaffed since COVID and haven't recovered. There used to be plenty of students willing to work jobs like that. These days not so much because they aren't "working their way through college" like past generations. The people who staff places like PKs and Champs, many or most aren't students. Lots has changed. So yeah, VT could build that entertainment district, but when the businesses that already exist don't have enough people to full staff them (or enough business to stay open 7 days in some cases) then how does adding even more help? It would just cause closures, and we'd be right back to the same place in terms of the overall supply. As someone else says, I think Blacksburg lacks the "critical mass" to add much more than what it has now. It seems like that for whatever new restaurant opens, another closes. It's the same for other stuff. My HOA has changed Property Management companies for the third time in four years because they can't find anyone who can do the job competently on a consistent basis (and rates have gone up $100 a month over the last two years). As of Friday, the town hasn't emptied the garbage dumps in my neighborhood in about three weeks. When I needed a new top for my car a few years back, I could only find one place between Bburg, Cburg and Radford that could do it. There's just not enough quantity of "talent" in the area to expand the infrastructure very much, IMO. Now, you can quite possibly point to poor local leadership as part of the reason for that. It probably is. But even if elite leadership came in and took over, it would take quite awhile to get things moving in the other direction. ** Edited by Chris Coleman at 2/9/2026, 1:27:10 PM
