First thing, I was never a boy scout and never considered myself better than anyone else. I just had parents (career Air Force dad) who pushed my brothers / sisters and me that doing the right thing is hard, but it's easier to live this way when difficult decisions are needed. There are many coaches who use NCAA rules as suggestions that they don't want to be caught doing. Crossing the line over little things is not problem in their view. But, I hope there are more than a few coaches lead the way they preach. I was a HS BB coach in Va late 80's ~ early 90's. I had my best team in all my years at this school 1990-91. One player on this team was a better student than BB player. He was re-taking Pre-Calculus that he got a D in previous year. His counselor recommended this for college transcripts. Second semester (Jan) started with him taking this class plus 2 others (block scheduling) and a study hall. The re-take didn't count as a class for VHSL eligibility purposes since he already passed it previously. So, he was only enrolled in 2 classes that fell under VHSL credit rules. He needed at least 3 classes. He was ineligible 2nd semester. Tough part, new counselor who took over for the other one due to having a baby, discovered this the last week of the season. Counselor said she could forget about it since it was so late in the season. I said no, let's figure out with AD and Principal what's next. We were 8-1 2nd semester, in 2nd place. He played in 4 of the wins because they were blowouts. We forfeited those 4 wins to drop us to 5th place out of 8 teams. Tournament time we lost in 2nd round of district tournament, season ends. I was surprised by a lot of reactions I got. Players (just about whole team) couldn't understand why we would just not tell VHSL. I got angry comments, in a team / parents meeting, from all but a couple of parents. I had other coaches at school who told me that I had more guts than they did. Luckily, we didn't have social media back then. Every team I had coached had a list of rules they and their parents signed. Rule #1 was always DO THE RIGHT THING. Following rules is part of the right thing, whether it seems fair or not.
