It makes him seam like a "me" guy instead of a team guy

A lot of fans like athletes who stay with one team for a long stretch and are identified with that team. Bird and Russell with the Celtics, Magic with the Lakers, Jordan with the Bulls, Duncan with the Spurs, Stockton and Malone with the Jazz, Olajuwon with the Rockets, Frazier and Ewing with the Knicks, Thomas with the Pistons, Curry with the Warriors. Lebron is a great player, but people view him as a mercenary.
