It was a resources conflict...
That was exacerbated due to personalities that was sold to the public as a job performance issue (i.e. being in the bubble so much)
Greenberg was frustrated he didn't get the support he felt he earned and the way he communicated that was poor and created a chasm between he and many in the department. Him not making the tournament gave them enough of a talking point to pull the trigger when he refused to play ball on coming to a department wide meeting and instead hosted a recruit on campus.
So was he correct in being frustrated about resources? Yeah, thats clearly still an issue
Was the department correct in being fed up in dealing with him? Yep, he needed to go about it better
Did they make the correct decision in firing him when they did? No, absolutely not. And it wasnt for merit. He still ranks among the top VT basketball coaches in the history of the program.
