So they're not running the actions correctly, and at first it seemed as though it was because they didn't know the actions, but now it seems like they know what to do, but are a step slow or recognize it late, and those things hurt spacing and timing. If you don't run the actions or make the right reads, it allows the defense to either guard 2 people with 1 defender or line up a secondary defender in a gap you'd like to attack. The most experienced position for VT is at center, but they're not making any of the cuts and don't command the ball enough to increase the consistency of the offense. If Lynn Kidd or Aluma were with this same group it'd be easier because you could throw the ball into him and still score in a variety of ways, so it's one way to bring other actions along slowly. But Poteat is more about exploiting matchups than a matchup problem himself. Wessler still has a way to go, and Jones can't get on the floor. So playing inside out isn't something you can do to settle things down. Ideally, you could roll with the second most experience in Rechsteiner, but he is still learning while playing higher level teams. He's starting to get some feel of what others are supposed to be doing but losing sight of what he can do himself. So a PG like Pedulla or even Storm Murphy would be better with this group (even without Aluma) because you could do what VT did with Pedulla last season and rely on him more until everyone got better acquainted with the system. They have neither. So everyone is kind of coming along together. That means you're a step slow which means defenders and secondary defenders are a step faster. Ideally, if everyone was shooting well you could shoot your way into some elasticity in the defense, but the people who were supposed to be shooting well (outside of Schutt) aren't shooting well. And obviously some of that is due to less clean looks. But also, they're missing some clean looks too. I think in most years if VT had some bad shooting luck their offense would run in the 60-90 range nationally. Same if they weren't executing. But together? That puts them in the 100s. I think both will eventually get fixed, but when? Do they get fixed consistently enough for the offense to actually be a weapon? TBD. This group is pretty bad knowing what to do, and not experienced enough (or skilled enough in Poteats/Wesslers case) to be a threat when the gaps are tighter. If MYs assistants convinced him a more athletic lineup would be the answer, they need to go. If MY is just trying something before he retires, then he should go. But whoever thought this roster would be an ideal candidate for the way MY coaches is dead wrong. I had higher hopes for Young, Brown and Jones, and they still could come along, but everyone else is playing about how you'd expect at this point in the year. And I'm just not sure how this gets rectified without knowing what goes on in their day-to-day. Does Ivy-Curry and a non-gambling Hysier Miller fix things? Not totally, but it's hard to imagine a 5 game losing streak with those 2 in the lineup But the football team needed 75 wide receivers to go 6-6, so alas...here we are
