I don't think that you should know the exact number, of course.
I mean that fans should know we have been historically mediocre.
What I really mean is this...when our basketball program takes turn for the worse, our overall fanbase has a tendency to grumble slightly and just accept it. They aren't willing to go the extra mile. The only reason we're upset right now after a 19-win season is because we recently made 5 straight NCAA Tournaments. And the reason we made 5 straight NCAA Tournaments is because Babcock hired Buzz Williams. Buzz was the most proven hire Virginia Tech has ever made in a major sport...and we responded by averaging 5700 in attendance in his first season. It was an incredible hire, out of left field, and the first time a VT administration has shown an interest in truly elevating the program. And the response of the collective fanbase was to not show up until he started winning.
When I say the "fans" I'm not talking about you and me and most of this board. If you are here, you most definitely care. I'm talking about your average Joe Blow Hokie fan.
I'll tell you another story. Back when VT used to go around the state to different Hokie Clubs for events, they took Cadarian Raines to one of them, along with a women's player. When they arrived at the event for one of the major in-state Hokie Clubs, the Hokie Club rep putting on the event greeted the women's player and called her Cadarian. So out of touch that the person didn't even know that Cadarian Raines was a MEN'S basketball player. And that's a major in-state Hokie Club, where the representatives are (in theory) supposed to be be paying attention.
So yeah, there's not a big drive among average Joe Blow VT fan to have a really good basketball program. There are some really good, really passionate Virginia Tech basketball fans. But not enough.
