I think he needed another year of seasoning before making the jump.

He had an absolutely outstanding conference tournament last year. But he was turnover prone in the regular season. I think he thought he had turned the corner following the conference tourney and was ready to move up, but in reality he needed another year of experience to build on what he had done in March. Unfortunately, he cost himself quite a lot by transferring.
