Gives MY time to figure it out, don't have confidence he will however
I'm sure he wants to drill guys in the offense, but if you never even get into the offense that's pointless. Breaking a press like that isn't that hard unless you're completely unprepared for it.
The worry with MY, and we saw this last year, is effective press breaks are almost always meant to create a man advantage in transition. MY's fundamental philosophy is to slow the game down to a crawl and let his efficiency win more than it loses. If you aren't going to take advantage of transition opportunities out of the press all you're doing is effectively increasing your chance of a turnover, giving your offense less time to operate, and tiring out your players without the corresponding extra free looks at the basket you get from the odd man rush.
Talented basketball players want to get out in the open floor, we've seen almost every talented ballhandler leave the program since he joined and personally I believe it's because MY's system is designed for guys who are out-talented to overperform by mitigating the use of superior athleticism, size, and skill. When you get guys who can win playing an AAU/NBA style, you have to adjust to find ways for them to overperform, right now we hamper those kinds of players with how we play.
Guys like Tyler Johson, Jaydon Young, Tobi Lawal, Jaden Schutt, hell even Rechsteiner, are all better playing in transition than in the half court because that's they way they played growing up. You can see it when we break out, we're just plain better pushing the ball up the floor but that runs counter to our philosphy.
It works at UVA because Bennett recruited defense-first guys, when you're recruiting offense-first guys they want to rack up points which is not how we want to play.
