Without being able to use athletic department revenue, that’s not feasible for us.
Basketball IMO is significantly harder because there’s a lot more competition for players, so the bidding gets higher and higher, you’re looking at $1M+ for an all-conference type performer.
It’s much easier to retain football players because they have a smaller impact on results and are thus worth less money. If a top WR costs $500k you can get 70% of his production for maybe $100k. An RJ Davis type player in basketball is probably worth 5-7 VT football starters or premier backups.
There are also only so many schools with the willingness and infrastructure to support football. VT is one of those.
On the basketball side the approach should be get a coaches coach and be a feeder program until legislation comes down on NIL. Go for guys who are overlooked and see what you can build.
