I think basketball is very different from football in regards to opting out

I will say that I've seen teams go very far in the NIT or win it all and come back the next year stronger. I would rather be in the NIT final four than be a first game exit in March Madness. Vegas makes that even more attractive. It's clear to me that our team can beat quality opponents on a given night and lose to "inferior" opponents on a given night which screams NIT contender more than NCAA contender.
