I'm just being realistic about this wildly inconsistent team. I'd rather
watch them make a deep run in the NIT than get a low seed in the NCAA tourney and get beat the first game. Last year, TAM and Xavier went to the final game and built on it this year and will both make the tourney with a chance to make it to the second weekend. Of course, I'd prefer us to run the table in the ACC tourney again, but I don't see us catching lightning in a bottle two years in a row.

I think basketball is very different from football in regards to opting out
I will say that I've seen teams go very far in the NIT or win it all and come back the next year stronger. I would rather be in the NIT final four than be a first game exit in March Madness. Vegas makes that even more attractive.
It's clear to me that our team can beat quality opponents on a given night and lose to "inferior" opponents on a given night which screams NIT contender more than NCAA contender.

Facts. Unfortunately, the admin of this site care more about keeping the
peace, access to players/coaches, and NIL deals than fair criticism.

CKB is so hesitant to try new things that I think he's worried she'll throw
the chemistry off of his main six players. Her face and body language look like she's frustrated. I mean, Geiman got crunch time minutes over Owusu at UVA with Liz and Soule in foul trouble. I couldn't understand why since Ashley is a better scorer and rebounder. His decisions in game baffle me.

Agree 100%. CKB on the radio show blamed on the newer rules about chinning
the ball and using elbows to clear, but I think that's a weak excuse.

I don't need a homework assignment, but the coach in Charlottesville seemed
to figure out how to recruit and consistently win in this league rather quickly.

Any other ACC team beats Clemson by double digits if the Tigers shoot 38%.
We bested them and shot 35%. đ¤Ŗ This is not a good basketball at all.

Nah, I enjoy being one of the first to realize how something is going to go
and then watching it unfold exactly the way I expected it to as everyone else swears it'll go down differently.
I've seen all I need to see in 3.5 years of CMY to know what we've got.

Obviously you need some sort of system, but without talent, the system
doesn't win consistently. Is that clear enough for your condescending self?

Now you're starting to peak my interest with critiques of the CMY system.
All of that totally makes sense. And for the record, I'm not in the "Pedulla sucks" or "Basile can't rebound" camp.

My take on CMY is that he's a solid mid-major coach, but will never be able
to recruit enough 4 stars to consistently be better than .500 in the ACC regular season. We're on year 4 and the program is regressing much like Fuente's teams did. Bottom line is that we don't have enough dudes as they say. A solid experienced coach like CMY can win consistently at the mid-major level, but it takes more than a great system to consistently win basketball games in the ACC. And before the ACC Champs banners come out, winning consistently in the regular season is what matters for a program, not catching fire for 3 games to win a tournament (think Josh Pastner of GT).
When our AD gets tired of being consistently .500 or worse in the regular season and moves on from CMY, I hope we go for a younger coach who is a proven recruiter at the major bball level. Notice I said proven recruiter not proven head coach. Talent wins games more consistently than coaching in the ACC.
The Hokie women's program is a perfect example of how important recruiting is. CKB couldn't coach his way out of a paper bag in game, but he can certainly recruit and has elevated that program to the top part of the ACC and consistently ranked in the Top 25. That team wins in spite of his ineptness in game.
It's a proven model. Follow it for the men's program too.

I had not seen that take and I actually agree with it. I (and many others)
just don't understand why you're always defending our coaching strategies. I bet CMY himself is more critical of himself than you are.

He was awful, but the homers on this board only see his positive plays.
The dude negates nearly all of those with turnovers, bad shots, stupid fouls, and sulking on the court. I'm over it and would rather see the younger guys get more minutes and start playing for next year.

TO numbers don't paint the whole picture. Bad shots are the same as TOs
and this team would be top 10 in the nation in those if it were an actual stat.

Hall's screen was perfectly clean. Mutts didn't call it out. That's on him.
Horrific offense and shooting lost this one. 50 points beats nobody but ourselves.

We were down 2 last year. 3 ball wins it. Totally different scenario.
Not sure what it would take for you to disagree with CMY once, just once! Are you two related?
Men's Basketball Board

Agree 100%. Horrific play call there!
CMY is too in love with jump shots and this team can't shoot consistently.
Men's Basketball Board

It looked like that was the first option which is idiotic with the way we
have been shooting. Why not get something going towards the rim and try to draw a foul?! CMY baffles me sometimes.

I've seen this movie before...
We'll take a bad contested shot here and then they'll come down and hit a big shot to win it or get fouled and win it at the line.

If Clemson weren't having their worst conference game of the year and
shooting 33%, we'd be getting blown out by 30. First to 55 points wins this one.

Add not calling screens to the list. Resulted in Hunter going full speed
into Hall's screen and reinjuring his arm.

Leading the team in TOs and fouls too. Let Hall take it right to the
baseline and then lazily reached in and gave up an and one. He's pretty much negated all of his positive stats with the turnovers, fouls, and poor defense.

This board loves excuses. We've certainly missed him, but if Pedulla and
Maddox had played to their potentials in a few of the losses, we might be .500. The ACC has a slim margin for error and this team just hasn't played well enough together to win a few of the past six.
Men's Basketball Board

I mean, what else is he supposed to say? One thing he did say that was a
little alarming is that he thinks the ACC is the best it's been in his four years. To me, that's coach speak that he's starting to realize that this team just isn't good enough to win a significant number of games in the conference this year.
Personally, I don't think we have enough ACC caliber talent. Yes, injuries have hurt this team, but if a four-week injury to a role player and not having a four-star freshman drop us to the bottom third of the conference, we weren't that good to begin with. Gotta have more dudes to be a serious contender in the ACC. Hopefully, CMY can land some more in the coming years.
