Great coaches tweak, not overhaul

I wasn’t a great coach, but we tried to tweak from year to year. When I coached my high school teams, our philosophy every year was: ‘Shooters shoot, rebounders rebound, and everybody plays defense’. Similar to Bennett’s Blocker _ Mover offense. Roles for entire team, down to the last player and even managers was communicated from the first day. Those reluctant to fill a role learned from the bench or bleachers. I even had to use some bench learning for my best shooters (one wouldn’t shoot if he missed his first shot of the game). They learned quickly what their role was. My rebounders learned if they wanted shots, a rebound was a pass to them, go get it.

When your best defender is injured, it kinda hurts your ability to defend.
