Chris is very much onto the fact that Mike Young has changed an overall philosophy to match his current roster They are sending more people to offensive rebound due to a lack of shooting consistency/skill. Similar to the time when Tyrece Radford was on the floor for 30 min/game and became one of the nation's leading offensive rebounders. There is certainly a bit of skill involved in getting offensive rebounds, but it's the change in philosophy that has led to the increase in rebounds in both instances. Typically VT sends either just the 5 or the 4 and 5 to the rim for offensive rebounds. But with this group, Tyler Johnson is always attacking the offensive glass along with Burnham, Poteat and Lawal. There is also a teaching point to create batted balls when they can't quite get to an offensive rebound on their own. This leads to more possessions, and with a low-efficiency offense, more possessions is better. As Chris pointed out, there's a big downside there. Transition defense. The more players you send to the glass, the less you'll be in front of an offense with a full head of steam in transition. Since Johnson, Burnham, Lawal and Poteat are the ones rebounding/batting then Hammond, Schutt, Young and Rechsteiner are the ones defending the rim...not favorable to VT In OOC, VT was somewhere in the 300s in transition defense. They've done a much better job in conference but are still 304th in adjusted transition efficiency. So, do you bring in players next season that more closely complement the intended system? Or do you tweak what you're currently doing and run it back with the current roster. My guess is they'll be somewhere in the middle but probably much closer to the intended system next season So don't panic next season when there are less offensive rebounds but VT is better
