Even the NBA has way more continuity to it than anything in college, as long as there is unrestricted movement of players you cannot implement a system and win at the highest level. It’s important to clarify system vs sets though, a system is designed to make the whole greater than the sum of its parts, sets are designed to get the parts advantageous situations. Systems are inherently more difficult because you sacrifice individual ability for team results, that’s a really hard sell in the free agency world because everyone wants to get theirs. Good systems allow players to do that, but it takes a while to understand how and most don’t have that level of patience. Recruiting the best athletes then tweaking your system is probably the best way to win now. More systems you find are actually more philosophies and they show up on defense more often. The pack line, matchup zone, havoc, etc are all systems. Offensively you have things like the motion offense, triangle, Princeton, but they’re harder to find because the bread and butter basic plays like PnR are very hard to stop if you have the best athletes.
