There are 1,255 kids in the portal today and only 4,654 D1 scholarships

Let’s be reasonable and assume that most teams aren’t carrying a full 13 scholarships players and are instead closer to 11 on average. Over 30% of D1 basketball players announced they were entering the transfer portal this season. VT is certainly above average, but let’s not pretend we’re some crazy outlier. Let’s also not pretend all the small mid-majors are seeing crazy roster turnover like the P6 teams do. Those kids only have other options if they’re really good

A fact that a lot of players learn once they hit the portal.**

We do look like an outlier in the sense that we only have 1 rotation player

I would say that Blackshear and Jalen Hudson (preNIL) did. Others, eh.**
