Why did VT drop 10 spots in the RPI after today's game?

Over past few days teams on our acc schedule have gotten smoked
We did not play 5 Acc teams this season, those 5 teams all won series this weekend vs teams we did play, so that hurts. Good news Cal beat Stanford, and Cal is 55 rpi. Need them to be top 60 as that is 2 quad 1 wins and checks that box, 7 quad 1 wins checks the box. .500 acc checks the box. We were sitting pretty at 37 rpi which checks, 47 not so much. Still think we are in but who knows. Maybe this is the year the acc tourney matters.

Looks like our loss yesterday puts us in must win territory for game 1

I would rather not lose
Get's us to 30 wins. Should be enough.

Unless Clemson, Pitt, Notre Dame etc win the tournament we should be ok
Can't have any of the lower half winning the thing.

Teams are bunched up between 35 & 45
The RPI point difference between #37 and #47 is small which can create large gains or losses in RPI. We are 29 points from being #37 & just 7 points from being #42. For perspective, we lost 36 RPI pts by losing today while NC St picked up 37 for winning. A 73 point swing. Current RPI board and how many points we are behind each team 35 Kentucky 85 36 Liberty 64 37 Miami (OH) 29 38 Southeast Missouri 28 39 TCU 24 40 Louisiana 22 41 High Point 17 42 North Carolina State 7 43 Texas State 5 44 Clemson 4 45 Troy 2 46 East Carolina 2 47 Virginia Tech 0 48 Arizona St -13

Exactly this, plus
Plus, indirect RPI impact games broke really poorly for Clemson and VT today. Hokies took a small hit from those, but the Tigers lost 16 RPI points (per Warren Nolan, assuming my math is right), and VT lost to them to at home. Just salt on the wound of an already costly home loss, which was just enough to place it at the bottom of that cluster. ** Edited by tefftdj23 at 5/16/2026, 10:23:15 PM
