We don't have enough arms - if one pitcher goes down the whole season is wrecked.
We now don't have the power bats this year like years' past.
The transfers come from smallish schools, and yes you can find a couple diamonds in the rough, but you cannot have a roster full of everyone being a diamond found in the rough.
What is our roster budget ranking in the ACC? I'd bet it is bottom 1/5.

Im not giving up on them yet - need to keep Renfro, Steig, and Grim healthy and find some middle relief. Timely hitting needs to happen.
One thing I notice that Im not thrilled with - 50% of our roster is from north of the mason dixon line...aligns with where our coached are from...baseball can be "good" up there, BUT ITS NOT THE SAME AS SOUTHERN BALL!
(Im from upstate NY too)...

this week Tennessee if #19 and Texas A&M is #22 in the D1Baseball.com poll. That's not head and shoulders above most of the ACC this year. So to say we are out of our league means we are not going to be competitive in our conference and not be in the conversation for an at-large bid.
Those might be true, but I'm with you in that I'm not burning the raft yet. The offense is worrisome though. How do we find the runs necessary to win games? Pitching I think (hope) will steady, but you still have to find 5+ runs to win in this era of college baseball.

so I would expect polls to be updated to have both of them in or near Top 10. To me, they both looked like Omaha caliber teams. It was disappointing to get blasted by both of them but the losses to them just confirm we aren't CWS material which I don't think was a realistic expectation for us this year or any year for that matter.
The game against Tennessee is a better barometer. They are currently #27 in Massey Ratings and we were able to hold our own against them. I share your thoughts on our hitting and pitching. I think the pitching will be ok as most of our struggles are confined to just a few core bullpen pitchers (Crowl, Robertson, Roe) and a slow start for Stieg coming off injury which hopefully he can work into a better spot over the course of the year.
The hitting on the other hand is a concern. Ethan Ball appears to be our only high-level bat this year with any consistency. Grube has some nice upside but not convinced yet how he'll hit once we get into ACC play. And the rest of the lineup appears to have some guys that will have some good moments but not sure we have enough to consistently plate runs at a high enough clip against the bulk of our schedule.

between the Massey and other rankings. I usually don't pay too much attention to the data models until a little later in the season. Point is we have some work to do and it's hard to envision us being the NCAA conversation as of today. Would love to be wrong.
