You are right in that followers are important
Followers translates to TV viewers...in 2025, GT was ranked #19 nationally in average TV viewership per game. Sure, the Jackets aren't Georgia, but they do alright when winning.
"Georgia Techβs 33.8 million viewers in Nielsen-rated broadcasts were the second-most in the Atlantic Coast Conference, behind only national runner-up Miami (Fla.)."
GT led the ACC in 2024 in average viewership.

Theory..ND decides who goes to P2
From Ryan G Thomas on X..."I will unequivocally say this. ND will decide the future of college football realignment. If it chooses to join the B1G, it will demand some combination out of Stanford, Duke, GT, Miami, UVA, UNC, and Cal to come with it. The B1G will acquiesce because the financial gain is that significant."

Surprised me...
I thought the Big 12 would have had more than that,,,Kansas (X2) and Baylor....Same with B1G....
UConn had been a monster in the Big East...and I do think "basketball" when I hear BE...but with the Huskies now an Indy,..????

Conferences Vary By Sport
Football....
The SEC Dominates...the Big Ten has come up some in that their top teams have won recent NC's....the SEC won 7 straight NC's not that long ago. Although the B1G has won the last three NC's....since 2000, the SEC has won 14 NC's to the B1G's 5.
Men's Basketball...
Moving year to year...but historically, the ACC has 15 NC's, SEC 12, Big East 11, Big Ten 10, Independent 6, Big Twelve 3 (I found that Big 12 number unbelievable but ESPN lists it...)

As an elder football guy
I live in the mountains of Western North Carolina...but have been to games in the Shoe (Ohio State), Notre Dame, Clemson (I am 90 miles away), LSU, Tennessee, VT, Va, Texas (I married into a Texan family)....While there is nothing like the atmosphere of a stadium, more folks may be like me...choosing to stay home and watch games on high quality big screens. The expenses for travelling, tickets, hotels that jack up game weekends prices etc have grown...we spend that money now in Italy, Spain, etc. I think that fans of a major football school must pay booster fees, travel costs, ticket costs and schools have moved to offer premium experiences to somewhat fewer fans....the days of bleacher seats for 80,000 and $50 tickets are in the past.

From FSU site
The capitol contributions (one-time requirement) and SIGNIFICANT RECURRING revenue for the Founders Suites (all but one sold), Loge Boxes (all sold), Westside Club seats (all sold), Champions Club seats (all sold), and West side chair back (60%ISH sold) + the $27M from the COT, will pay off Doak renovations over time. Founders Suites has five-years to pay off their one-time contributions ($64M), Westside Club seats had two-years ($22mISH), Champions Club and West sides seats also had two years.

Of course
It is the Boosters at FSU who are a Direct Support Organization and the Athletic Department must be self sustaining in that no taxpayer state funds are used...Alford as AD isn't the financial guy...Seminole Boosters Inc are.

Amortized Bonds for infrastructure
"FSU isnβt βout of money.β Itβs intentionally levered. Those are revenue bonds backed by future cash flows, not payday loans taken because payroll was missed. Thatβs how capital intensive organizations fund fixed assets."

While I did not teach at FSU, I was under contract as a consultant
Many Professors desired the cachet of rubbing elbows with "peers" and many were alumni of ACC institutions...there was a desire to be associated with well regarded schools like UNC, Duke, Virginia...and not just be seen as a football factory.....in 2012, when the FSU President polled them, FSU was ranked UNWR #101 as a National University...there has been a push to hire better staff...The number of staff who are National Academy members has doubled...the USNWR Ranking has moved up 50 places...Sure, the conference that you play sports in may not have had an effect...but the ACC has been good for FSU.

public perseption
It is public perception that being in an "academic conference" changes...
University Of Georgia is in the SEC...many would not credit Georgia as being ranked higher in USNWR National Universities...than VT, Penn State, Minnesota, Michigan State, UConn, Indiana, Syracuse, Rutgers, etc.
When the FSU trustees were looking at the Big 12 in 2012, FSU President Barron wrote "The faculty are adamantly opposed to joining a league that is academically weaker --"

I can see why FSU,,
I can see why FSU may want an 8-2 schedule rather than a 9 game conference schedule....they play Florida, Miami, and Clemson every year and add Notre Dame in half of the seasons from 2026-36. Plus have home and homes with Alabama and Georgia....Why add another ACC game that will bring fewer viewers and be shown on ACCN ?

Pitt is #5
Four ACC teams already have an annual OOC game with a OOC rival...Clemson-SC...FSU-Fla...Louisville-Ky...GT-GA.

The Non P2 Penalty
#5 Miami is playing ranked USF who has a shot at beating three ranked teams in a row...
But...it won't be a big viewership game because it will be on CW..at 4:30

"Ehibition game" or brand building?
You can call it an "exhibition game", but you can see where this might be going.
Miami's AD..."The brands need to play each other more," Radakovich said. "That's what has to happen. Do we divide into two divisions? Who gets to play Notre Dame? How are we doing those kinds of things? And if the SEC goes to nine (conference games) we might have to go to nine as well with a bifurcated brands and non-brands [divide]."
FSU's AD..."Today in college football, more than ever, it's important for strong brands to play strong brands," Alford said. "That helps our brand, as well as all of us within the conference. We've been consistent in that belief for a while now as you can see in our nonconference scheduling philosophy. It's important for our conference and our media partners."

Since unequal sharing is based on viewership over a five year moving window
Since unequal sharing is based on viewership over a five year moving window...the TV slots allotted will impact that. A good Miami team will get slots (they will get ratings versus ND, Florida, FSU, and SMU (if SMU is still ranked).
Likewise, FSU will get ratings vs Bama, Miami, Florida, Clemson...
VT has slots with FSU, Miami, a possibly ranked Cal and Louisville...VT must have decent W-L record at the time rto attract viewers.
