The Goal is Progress each Week

The goal each week is to get better and better. I feel like the Hokies were much improved after winning the series the weekend before against a tough Charlotte club. It’s always nice to get a sweep and look good doing it. Starting Pitching - B Standout - Griffin Stieg Bullpen - B Standout - Manning, Buckler and Shoemaker Defense - A Standout - Everyone - 1 Error in 27 innings Hitting - B+ Standout - Ben Watson 7-13 8 RBIs 1 πŸ”¨, Michel 5-10 5 RBIs, 2 πŸ”¨ Martin 7-12 2 rbis, McCann 3-6 5 RBIs 1 πŸ”¨ Hopefully, we can get a little better each week before getting into ACC play. Good team coming to Blacksburg this weekend in Stony Brook. Lets keep the momentum rolling.

Good News

Tackett sounds like he’s had a great summer. May definitely be in the lineup next year. Nice to see how Aaron has adjusted quickly to the new level. Curious to see where Micheletti plays when he gets to campus. Looks like the bat plays for sure. Nice to see Ebel’s bat coming along. Those defensive stats seem a bit odd. 17 stolen bases in 2 games. Wonder if Crowl can help us on the mound at all next year. We either need some major development or to piece it together.

Hmmmm

Sounds like HokiesACC2004 have some inside info.

Risky Play for Donay!

He won’t catch there. Looks like he’s transferring to be a primary DH unless they’re planning on moving him to OF or 1B. Very unlikely he’s going to come in and outplay Heyman. 2023 (Freshman): Luke Heyman Named the All-SEC Freshman Team while playing in 55 games, including 51 starts at catcher, first base, and designated hitter Slashed .314/.366/.555 across 191 at bats Tallied 12 home runs, two triples, six doubles, 39 RBI, 30 runs and one stolen base.

Possibly

He could still return couldn’t he?

Numbers

Cooke got 27 at bats last year and Ebel got 71. Very small sample size. I will say from a defensive perspective, they’re both much better than Donay. Donay brought way more to the table offensively for sure.

Maybe

Cooke, nor Ebel have actually had a legitimate sample size of at bats. I bet Donay ends up somewhere in the SEC.

2024 Projection

Catcher - Could be a toss-up. I can see Donay moving to OF or DH. Infield - Set Outfield - I can definitely see Eisert being in a good spot to take over a starting role. Tackett has played well this summer as you mentioned. I could also see as mentioned above Donay transitioning to RF. RHP - I agree with your list. We just need to figure out where all the pieces fit. LHP - This is the scary one. Only one coming back.

Transfers

What all transfers do we have coming in? Also, anymore expected to leave? What's the cutoff to enter portal?

Catchers

Donay threw out 7 of 32 this year, 3 in the Miami game. Ebel threw out 4 of 27. Cooke threw out 2 of 13. Errors Donay - 6 Ebel - 1 Cooke - 2 Curious to see what they do with the catching situation next year. Does Donay move to DH, another position or does he stay put behind the plate? Regarding Tyler Stephenson, Donay is bigger. Ebel is really good defensively, but the bat is behind the defense. Cooke is the wild card. We haven't seen enough of him to really know. I'm sure there will be another catcher coming in too.

Thoughts

If we win our pool and advance to semifinals do y’all think that gets us in tournament? What do we have to do to advance to tournament in everyone’s opinion?

Wake

1st baseman for Wake is the best player on the field and there isn’t a close 2nd.

Bigger Issue

To me, him not standing on 2nd after that is a far bigger issue than Elbin sending someone who was thrown out.

Jones didn’t score.

He was forced out at home on a Donay ground ball to 3B.

No he didn’t.

He was forced out at home on a Donay ground ball to 3rd.

Doubt it.

He’s a liability defensively. He’s a DH.

Huge.

Almost as big as Jones not being on 2nd due to lack of hustle. He would have scored that inning. Instead he was forced out at home. Those 2 runs equal a win.

Agreed.

The only problem is those things tend to rear their head against better competition.

Lol.

Routine single turned into a double by Clemson. Passed ball after passed ball. Same thing every weekend last month or so. You just can’t make those mistakes in games like this.

Lost

How can you be playing in a game this big and lose focus at multiple positions? As mentioned, laziness is abound and they’re allowing it.

Scoring

Who’s the scorekeeper? They scored Hurleys a triple?!?! Looked like a clear E8.

Pitching

Lynchburg high school arms getting some work tonight.

Lineup

What is the deal with the lineup today?!?!

Myth

Catching with two hands is a myth that little league coaches still teach their players. Catching the baseball with 1 hand, eyes behind it allows for much more adjustability than attempting to catch with two hands. Attempting to catch every fly ball with two hands causes a lot less range of motion. Try it for yourself.

Defense

Apparently, they prefer offense over defense. Coming back to burn them.

Big Game

A win tomorrow does wonders for the mindset moving forward.

Lineup

What are everyone's thoughts on the lineup? I definitely think it's been pretty solid. We've obviously had issues with runners in scoring position.

Big Hits.

Every big hit we get is when the game is already out of reach. Frustrating.

Doubt it.

Baseball has the luxury of turf so that will help a ton and I think the rain will be gone by then.

Nice Work

I think the bullpen is struggling with injuries currently. Once that gets cleaned up I think that will help a ton at the end of games. Arguelles and Green have been good for sure. I’m sure Hackenburg will figure it out. In his defense I don’t think he allowed many hard hit balls against Pitt. In regards to hitting, a lot of the home runs and RBIs have come later in games during games that were out of reach for some of the backups. Big difference in a 0-0 game and a 21-6 game in regards to quality of pitching. I think that’s why we dominate during mid week games.

ACC Final Standings Prediction for Hokies

I'm calling 15-15 ACC Record. In 2021 NC State started ACC play 1-8. After 15 conference games, they were 5-10. If we were getting blown out every game, it would be different. We haven't looked overmatched at all yet. We're currently 4th in ACC in BA, #2 in total bases. We're #1 defensively and we're 12th in team ERA. Before anyone asks we're #3 in strikeouts behind Miami and Georgia Tech. We've been in every single ball game, but 1. If they can clean up the bullpen, throw strikes, get some timely hits, and get everyone in the bullpen healthy, it could be a huge turnaround. At least we're not Hail State Baseball. They lost to Vandy 26-3, 18-5, and 11-7 this weekend. 2 years off a National Championship. Let's all be patient and supportive and see if we can root them on to turn this around. ** Edited by jsteinhokie at 3/27/2023, 3:13:38 AM
